Nursery Design Board

Designing our baby girl’s room has been so much fun and something I’ve been chipping away at the last couple months. I knew I wanted to keep this room pretty neutral but I’d be lying if I said I haven’t been gravitating to a couple pink and floral accents here and there. I’ve found myself quite drawn to countryside critters, particularly bunnies, ducks, sheep and even a mouse or two. I love the look of floral and toile wallpaper in nurseries and kids room but after doing some calculations, I quickly realized real wall paper wasn’t in the budget, and definitely not floor to ceiling, wall to wall. So rather than spending thousands on wallpaper, I’m going to try a faux version using a painted background with wall decals on top - which will only cost me maybe $200. I’m only doing the upper half of the wall and adding wall trim to divide the sections. Since it’s a relatively small room, I felt floor to ceiling pattern would make it feel smaller and so this solution allows the room to breath a bit, especially since I want to bring in other patterns via a rug, blankets, bedding, etc.

I was lucky enough to find the Hemnes dresser on marketplace and in such great condition. The Pax wardrobe we bought new and while I was worried it was going to feel too bulky in the room, it actually feels perfect. I’m having mixed feelings about glider chairs since they are a) quite bulky b) expensive and c) a bit of an eyesore. I’m keeping my eye out on marketplace for one that’s smaller and in good condition. Fingers crossed!

Since this room will still serve as Ben’s office while the baby sleeps in our room, we’re going to leave the desk in there for now and swap it for a crib later in the Fall/Winter when we’re ready for that transition. While the room will phase out as an office, it still needs to be somewhat of a general storage room, hence the Pax wardrobe and some reorganizing we did in the closet. We just spent the last couple weekends doing all of that and we’re quite happy with the results! Lots of tucked away storage and room for all the baby things I’m sure we will be amassing in the near term.

Now the fun part: all the details and accessories. H&M Home and Zara Home really are the best for finding budget-friendly baby/kids decor. They have such great woven and textile basket options and sweet accents like that brass mouse hook. All the ditsy floral prints too, please. And I can’t wait to get my hand on those scalloped organizers from Zara Home. For art, I’m looking to my trusty Etsy to find affordable art that I can download, print and pop into thrifted and Ikea frames. I love switching out standard Ikea hardware for something with a little more personality, in this case some classic aged brass knobs and, you guessed it, bunny shaped ones too. While I’m sure the actual room will evolve a bit from this design board, it’s set the foundation and provided me with direction to get started. I’ll be sure to share progress a long the way and of course the final outcome!
